SPF on Sunscreens, More than Just Numbers

Most people are aware of the importance of applying sun block or sunscreen lotion before going to the beach or spending time outdoors. Sunscreens with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB are effective in protecting the skin from sunburn and delaying signs of aging like wrinkles, dry skin and hyper pigmentation. It also helps in preventing some types of skin cancer. Dermatologists recommend the use of sun block every day or whenever going outdoors. But since not all sunscreens are the same, one must choose the right product to match their skin and consider the SPF rating to get maximum protection from these products.

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is an indicator of the protection level that one can get from the UVB rays. A sunscreen with SPF 15 for instance protects the users from UVB rays fifteen times longer than individuals without sunscreen. Those who intend to spend long hours outdoors or go out during the peak hours of the sun should go for higher SPF levels to get the most protection. Skin cancer advocates consider a minimum of SPF 15 as sufficient for the usual everyday routine and at least an SPF 30 for intense outdoor activities. However, it is false to assume that the increment in SPF level is proportional to the increased level of protection. Studies show that there is only 4% to 5% difference in the amount of UVB rays filtered by an SPF 15 sunscreen compared to those of an SPF 30 and SPF 50 products. The increase in SPF levels gives you longer protection period, but the time and frequency of reapplication still depends on the skin type of the person or how fast the skin can get sun burn without any protection. An SPF 15 for instance can offer protection of up to approximately five hours for skin types that can last 20 minutes in the sun without getting sun burn.

In general, Dermatologists recommend sunscreen to be applied at least 20 minutes before going out and reapplying after about two hours. The SPF in sunscreens are more than just labels, it serves as a guide on how to protect your skin effectively against the harmful rays of the sun. Products with a minimum of SPF 15 and a broad-spectrum coverage are your best sun protection buddies for the sunny days of summer, so don’t forget to factor-in the SPF in choosing your sunscreen.

If you had a penny for every time your mom or grandma told you to eat your vegetables when you were a kid, you’d probably be filthy rich by now. What they didn’t tell you back then, was that some veggies- when applied directly to your skin- can almost miraculously give you that flawlessly smooth and supple skin models would kill for. From the plethora of wonder fruits and veggies, the combination which proves to be good for your skin is the lemon and tomato.

Combine this with lemon juice which is rich in Vitamins A and C, and you’ve got a power product for your skin. This marriage between antioxidants and vitamins- and not that cute hunk around the block- is responsible for that rosy glow on your skin. After rinsing your face and neck with plain water, dab it dry and then rub the tomato slices on your skin. Leave the tomato-lemon rub on your skin for fifteen minutes, then rinse and pat dry. You should begin to see results in a week. If the lemon juice irritates your skin, you can sprinkle less on the tomatoes.

Lemon itself is is good in killing bacteria, add a bit of honey and your skin will get a good moisturized look in no time. To do this, you’ll need one tablespoon of lemon juice squeezed in a bowl wit one table spoon of honey applied to your face and left for like 10 to 15 minutes. Get a warm wash cloth to remove the the mask (lemon-honey combo) by wiping it off.

Just Another Skin-related post

Just when I thought I am free from the skin troubles that young adults face,I started having pimples again. I can’t say that it is exactly adult acne but I’m not dropping the possibility. I am 30 and yet I feel like that time when I would be frustrated seeing one pimple pop up my face…that was 15 years ago!

We all know that healthy eating and lots of water makes the skin healthy too. So why, even with my preference of eating fruits and healthy stuff, this still happened? I blame my not taking contraceptive pills anymore. This caused hormonal imbalance making pimples show up at my back and cheeks. I have been using a waterbased cleanser for the pimples, at the moment I do not see any improvement so I took in supplements containing carotene and vitamin E, which boosts skin health as studies suggested. A good source of vitamin E, avocado, is now part of my daily diet.

There are lots of facial products that are sold in the market nowadays, I believe though that each individual’s skin is unique and would respond differently to various components, that’s why its best to visit a dermatologist to help you out with skin problems. Otherwise, if you opt to buy products without medication, be sure that you understand well the “ingredients” used in them.
